Good question because things are very strange in Bulgaria; strange decisions are being made. Rather than choosing younger gymnast, the Bulgarian Federation has encouraged 4 of the gymnasts who won bronze medals in 2004 (Athens) to return. In all likelihood, the Bulgarian group will consist of:

Eleonora Kezhova (2004 group)
Kristina Rangelova (2004 group)
Galina Tancheva (2004 group)
Vladislava Tancheva (2004 group)
Stella Sultanova

Also selected for the team are Mihaela Maevska (the reserve for the 2008 group), Boryana Yordanova (who may also have been a reserve in 2008) and Reneta Kamberova ( who used to perfrom as an individual for Club "Iliana"). Also, Monica Vedrichkova and Gergana Tasheva.

Maia Paunovska was considering staying but did not appear at the internal competition for selecting the 2009 team. Not clear what she intends to do.

I am not 100% sure but I think they are 22-23 now. Maybe 21, but not younger.
Krisi Rangelova has a baby who's about 2 years old.

I am all supportive of gymnasts who compete until they are "older." I love Almudena Cid and I think we should all feel blessed to have had the chance to watch her perform for so many years.

That said, I also think that when you are 25 or over, married, have a child etc., it is simply harder to focus on gymnastics. Gymnasts are human, too, but they are especially human when they have other things in life to take care of, other than gymnastics. How can they be spending 8 hours a day practicing their routines and also going out to nightclubs or staying awake to take care of a baby? It's one thing when you are 16 and all you worry about is high school and gymnastics. After 22-23, you begin to want to go university, have serious romantic relationships, family etc. Also, the chances to get an injury are always present.

So, while I applaud the 4 girls from Athens for returning, I also think that expecting them to last until 2008, when they will be 25-27, is not very wise. Moreover, Bulgaria has MANY equally talented young girls who can totally do well in the group (maybe not as individual competitors, but in the group, yes). These girls are not going to get their chance to try to be in the Olympics. I just think the whole situation is strange.

Thanks Crazy_fan for the informaton! maybe your federation is planing to have an experience group to the next W.C in 2009(they have less then a year to work).and after the W.C. they will have all the time in the world to build with the young gymnasts a group that will be ready for the next O.G.

This may be a smart plan but the coaches and Maria Gigova keep saying these are the girls from London, not just for the next WC. We'll see.
